If a culture is always shifting, then the commodified, tourist-facing version of a place isn’t a fake version bolted onto something real. It’s just the most recent layer.
We don’t go looking for the ‘authentic’ as much as we try to recreate a photo we’ve already seen.
As Proust wrote, “The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Today, those eyes must unlearn how to see through an algorithm. Only then can we return to traveling to discover, not imitate.
